GMIAU is running a number of projects aimed at providing legal advice and support to particular groups of people who are vulnerable.
Destitution: We have secured some additional resources to be able to advise people who are destitute and who may have the basis for a new asylum claim, particuarly if they have new evidence to make a fresh claim. If we find that a new claim has 'legal merit' and a fresh claim is submitted to UKBA, this can trigger Section 4 support of accommodation and a voucher to the value of £35 per week for daily living costs.
Women who are seeking asylum and who are threatened or subject to violence: This is a new project funded to support women only. We can provide additional support in the form of interpreters and childcare and we will be developing a number of policy responses and campaigns based on the experiences of the women we see.
Children: We have been successful in securing additional resources to support children, many unaccompanied, who are going through the asylum process. The project will be to help support children to understand their rights, gain confidence by meeting with others in a similar situation, and train support workers to better understand how they can support children in this situation.
