Detention of Children

Children, like Child M, the 9 year old boy from Manchester who has been detained twice in the past two years for over 70 days, continue to be held in prison-like conditions. It is a shocking indictment of an immigration system that treats children who are subject to immigration control as criminals and disregards their health, safety and well-being.

Get your MP to sign the Early Day Motion 139: Detention of Children

That this House notes with concern that around 2000 children are detained each year in immigration detention centres, some for periods of several months; further notes the opinion of Save the Children and the Children's Commissioner that this is unjustified and damaging; further notes that families with children are among the least likely to abscond; further notes that some EU and Commonwelath countries have successfully introduced solutions other than secure detention of families who have exhausted their asylum claims; and urgently calls on Government to end the practice of holding children in immigration detention centres.
