Joshua's Story

Joshua is a gay man from Uganda.  He had been arrested and ill
treated in Uganda where homosexuality is punished with life
imprisonment.  He managed to get to the UK but lost his asylum
claim, appeal and application for Judicial Review.  He,
understandably, became very ill and was hospitalised.  In hospital
his consultant referred him to us where we helped him make a
fresh application and gave advice to his campaign team.  Joshua
mounted a massive campaign to stay in the UK which got lots of
support from the gay, and wider, community in Manchester.  At
court Joshua won his case and now has leave to remain in the
UK.  He hopes now to study at University.

Samuel's Story

Samuel is a young man who fled from persecution and violence in
the African country where he was born.  His mother died as a
result of police violence and he does not know to this day whether
his two sisters survived. He came here as a teenager but when he
turned 18 he was told he could no longer stay in this country in
spite of the fact that he was studying hard at college and had
done his best to rebuild his life here.  How could he appeal
against this harsh decision?  He asked various solicitors but was
turned down, mainly because they could not get ‘legal aid’ to fund
the work they did on his case.  We took on his case – and won!
Samuel now knows that he can stay in this country and he has a
hopeful future.  He is planning to go to university next year and
wants to try to trace his sisters.
